Quick access to your money is convenient. If you need cash at anytime, an ATM is where you go. However, not all ATMs are created equal – and there are certain precautions you should take to safely conduct any transaction at an ATM.
Be aware of Your surroundings.
Whether at a branch or standalone ATM, if you feel uncomfortable in any way, simply use a different ATM – or make your transaction at another time. Select ATMs that are out in the open and in a busy area – free of shrubbery and decorative partitions or dividers. If an ATM is obstructed or dimly lit, don’t feel that you have to use it if it makes you uncomfortable. Be wary of anyone trying to “help” you with your transaction – if you didn’t ask for help, you don’t need it.
Keep your PIN protected.
When you’re at an ATM, don’t allow anyone to look over your shoulder while you enter your PIN. Additionally, memorize your PIN – don’t ever write it down (especially on the back of your card).
Notify your financial institution immediately of card problems.
If an ATM “eats” your card, or you experience any other type of issue while using the ATM, wait at the ATM and contact your financial institution immediately. While you may not be able to resolve the issue on the spot, you can ask for a new card. You may also call the ATM’s owner (if not at your financial institution) to report what happened. If anything seems different with your transaction, something goes wrong or you’re suddenly aware of a potentially dangerous situation, cancel your transaction immediately and find another ATM.
Count your money in the car.
Never count cash at the ATM or in public – wait until you’re in your car or another secure place to do so. If you’re confronted by a thief who demands your money, you should always comply. You don’t know how dangerous this person could be, and your money and other valuables are not worth risking injury or worse.
Be quick.
When using a drive-up ATM, keep your engine running, keep your doors locked and leave enough room to maneuver between your car and the one ahead of you if you need to leave quickly.
The key to ATM safety is to be aware of your surroundings and not put yourself in harm’s way. We also suggest monitoring your statements closely and reporting any problems to your financial institution immediately.
